With so many options to choose from
you're sure to find a string instrument that suits you! When many people think of string musical instruments, they think of violins or cellos. Actually, the family of instruments is much wider than that; the piano is widely considered a string instrument, as is the guitar. It's the most common type of instrument, and if you or your child is interested in learning about music, a string instrument is a great learning tool. If your ultimate goal is to play in a school, community or professional orchestra, a bowed instrument like the violin, viola, cello or string bass is your best choice. These instruments most often played by pulling a bow across the strings to make them vibrate. By holding down the strings in different places, you can change the sound. Sometimes these instruments are also played by plucking the strings with your finger. The violin is the heart of the orchestra, and is the highest pitched of the common string musical instruments. Next lowest is the viola, which is often overshadowed by the more popular violin and cello, but whose mid-range mellow sound is both beautiful and essential in orchestras. The cello, made famous by Yo Yo Ma's incomparable playing is a much larger instrument and has a low, sweet sound. Largest of all is the string bass, which must be played by standing and has the lowest range. The piano may not look like a string instrument, but if you open the cover, you can see why it is. There are dozens of strings inside, and pressing one of the keys causes a small hammer to strike the string, producing a sound. There are many kinds of pianos, from upright pianos which can easily fit in your home, to grand pianos which are played with orchestras. If your goal is to learn about musical in general, and enjoy it in your own home, learning the piano is a good choice. While the bowed stringed instruments are best enjoyed when played in a group, the piano is something you can play on your own, just for yourself or to entertain friends. The final group of string musical instruments are the guitar and related instruments. The guitar is also a good instrument if you want to practice and perform on your own. The guitar is played by plucking the strings, and there are many kinds available depending on the sound you want. Naturally, if your musical tastes are less classical and more rock and roll, the guitar is a good choice for you. String musical instruments are everywhere, and mastering one is a true accomplishment. You can enjoy the social environment of an orchestra, enjoy live music in your own home, or take your guitar on stage in front of a roaring crowd. String musical instruments are truly a great way to enjoy music in a wide variety of ways. |
